When I think of Thanksgiving, I always remember my special part. I would grind with a Kleen Kutter the celery, onions, and carrots, and whatever my mother decided to put in the mix. My brother Charles would try something different. He added clams one year.
It was always a busy time getting prepared for the Big Day. My mother would get up early and put the ginormous turkey in the oven. It smelled so good when you woke up two or three hours later. Then she would start the other stuff. We had pumpkin pies, cranberry salad, potatoes and gravy with lots of butter. That was always the requisite.
Then there was the Danish Sweet and Sour Cabbage. This would take the smell of the turkey away. 😟 Not a good thing.
For dessert, she made Carrot Pudding. I loved carrot pudding with lemon sauce and whipped cream. This carrot pudding was baked in a coffee can and steamed to perfection. She would sometimes make this two or three days ahead.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE
