MADSENS OF MT. PLEASANT
Our Blog has been posted for over 10 years and most photos, histories, stories, family group sheets, obituaries, etc. have now been posted.
We have invited followers (of which we have many) to send in their family histories and stories as well.We have just about run out of these.
The Madsens of Mt. Pleasant is a book of history edited and published in 1967 by Co-Editors Nell Madsen and Pearle M. Olsen. It is a real treasury of histories, photos and more. Many current local families are offspring of the original Madsens to Mt. Pleasant. Their stories are of love, success, sacrifice, and of great interest. However, much has happened since 1967.
If you and your family have more updated material we encourage you to send it in and we will include it in our postings. (pandk@cut.net)

BUILDING OF ST. GEORGE TEMPLE ~~From Our Archives

Building of St. George Temple
Work was commenced on the St. George Temple, March II. 1873; as in the past, the citizens of Mt. Pleasant readily responded to the call. Those at home donated liberally and on December 2nd. the following men and boys left their homes to perform labor on the temple: Lars Rasmussen, Christian Christensen, Hans Hansen, Soren Jacobsen, Chris Peel, August Nelson, William Olson, Jacob Jensen, Hans Davidson, Olaf Rosenlof, Thomas Coates, Christian Madsen, Thomas Fuller, Andrew Rolph, Abraham Day, Ezra Day, James C. Christensen, Joseph Burton, Fred Mauritz Petersen, Nels Syndergaard, Frank Keller, with Andrew Madsen (Harbro), Jake Bohne, Bennett Monk and Peter Rasmussen as teamsters. The four last named soon returned to Mt. Pleasant, while the others remained until during the spring of 1874. At the present writing, 1939. the only two of the entire party now living are Andrew Rolph and William Olson. At the time the party left Mt. Pleasant, they were instructed by the bishop to apply to the bishops of the Wards for shelter and supplies while camping; however, at Indian Creek or Pine Dug Way they encountered a very severe blizzard, and after vainly endeavoring to travel on, were compelled to camp in the open without any shelter whatsoever, and for a time feared they would all perish. Finally, December 14th, after having traveled in a heavy, blinding snowstorm most of the way, they reached St. George safely. January 4th, four loads of sup plies were taken to them by James Larsen, Sylvester Barton, Soren Hansen Jacobsen, and Christopher Johnson. taken from History of Mt Pleasant by Hilda Madsen

Comment from Lee Christensen:: If you haven't dated Mina Hasler's 4th grade class you might check this computation: Margaret Thompson is there. She was a long time teacher at Wasatch , a local girl, and graduated from there 1917. Going back 12 years is 1905 plus grade 4 is 1909. I'll pull up the 1910 census and see how many of these students are there as age 11. This is about as advanced in math as I get. CL Stewart the principal and upper level math teacher ,North Sanpete ,would be disappointed at what little I've carried into my declining years. lee
Short sample confirms my math. Margaret is there age 11, as is Douglas Gunderson age 11, Katie Erickson age 11 Cyril Fowels and Rhoda Jorgensen both lee age 11..

Karen Kay Burton ~~~ Friend and Coworker
Karen Kay Burton
9/11/1940 ~ 10/13/2022

Karen Kay Burton, 82, of Mt. Pleasant passed away peacefully on October 13, 2022.
Karen was born on September 11,1940 in Mt. Pleasant to Carol Agusta Jones and Abe Jerald Burton.
After graduating from High school Karen took an internship for the FBI’s Deserter- Selective Service Unit where she clerked for a year in Washington DC. She returned to Sanpete and received a teaching degree from Snow College. This degree took her to Green River, Utah where she met her late husband, Harold Harper. She was a stepmother to Tim and Vanessa then also had four more children of her own. Jill, Russell, Michael and Daniel. She decided to return to her roots and moved back to Mt. Pleasant where she was a care giver to her mother for many years and had a lengthy career as the local librarian.
If Karen wasn’t at home with a book in her hand, she was usually out to a yard sale. She had and eye for unique and unusual treasures and could never pass up a good deal. She spent a lot of time taking photographs and putting scrap books together. The family will have these books to reflect on and enjoy thanks to her efforts.
While we are sad in her passing, we are glad she has been reunited with her family, especially her daughter Jill. We hope she will find peace in their loving arms.
Karen is survived by her brothers Jim, Jerold and David. Her four sons and twelve grandchildren.
The family would like to give a special “Thank You” to the kind people at Mission at Community Living for giving her such great care for many years. Graveside services will be held Friday, October 21, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery under care Rasmussen Mortuary.
