Historical Perspective

Grandma Alice was born in 1912.
She told us about the Spanish Flu of 1919-20
and
How it affected her life and family
as well as every person who lived through those times.
Oh the wisdom she had
and the many experiences.
She passed away at the age of 98 years.

Selections from the NSH North Sanpete High School Yearbook 1929

It was interesting to find that the students of North Sanpete High School honored their pioneer heritage with the picture of our pioneer monument on one of the first pages of their yearbook in 1929.  Today, I wonder if the current generation shares that gratitude.  We owe so much to our pioneer forefathers, but how easy it is to forget the struggles the pioneers had  as they settled here.  Too many of our current gneration are only interested in the here and now; others  "Progress" instead of  "Gratitude".  And for some discouragement rather than "Counting our Blessings".

During the next few weeks I will post selections from that same 1929 North Sanpete High School Yearbook.  Hopefully you will find one of your ancestors there.  This yearbook belonged to my sweet mother-in-law, Alice Hafen.

We have many more photos, readings and entries from Alice Hafen on her own site: http://alicehafenphotos.blogspot.com/

For now these happy days will soon be past and leave their pleasant memories alone.

Root Beer In A 1 Gallon Jar ~ Alice Hafen

Two inches of hot water
Two cups of sugar
 (Shake until dissolved)
Then add cold water to make luke warm
Add two teaspoons of dry yeast
 (Shake until dissolved)
Add two tablespoons of Root Beer extract
 (Shake until dissolved)
Then fill the jar with warm water.
Screw on the cap tightly
Let stand at room temperature.
Refrigerate

This recipe has not been tested.  The root beer that I remember Alice making was put in regular soda bottles and capped with an old fashioned bottle capper. She would make it for Christmas.  And even though it had a yeasty taste, it was an interesting family favorite.  One year we made "Bran Beer".  We stored it in the root cellar.  Then one by one we could hear the bottles explode.  That was the one and only time we tried to make Bran Beer.
