Carrie Nielsen was born 13 August 1889 in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Niels Peter Nielsen and Mary Maria Christiansen. She married Wilford Franklin Hafen October 19, 1907. She was the mother of three boys, Boyd W., Bert, and Neil Hafen.

Wilford died in a horse accident, leaving her a widow with three boys to care and provide for. She learned the skills of a midwife and helped bring many beautiful babies into the world. She also worked as a nurse for Dr. Sundwall, Dr. Winters and Dr. Madsen. Many of the current citizens of Mt. Pleasant remember 'Carrie' being there for them in their time of need.
