My father-in-law explained to me that he had work identification that
reversed his given and middle names because during the Depression men applied
for work under their true name and also under variations to increase their
chances of securing work in those tough times. He worked in the Portland (OR)
shipyards under the name of James Clifton LaRue rather than Clifton James LaRue.
This was before Social Security, so it was not difficult to change a name when
seeking employment.
